As a loyal supporter, you know the work that we do at Parks & People is centered around improving the quality of life for Baltimore City residents, through our mission of connecting people to nature and their community with vibrant parks and green spaces. Since 1984, our aim has been to have an authentic and transformative impact on the time that residents spend outdoors.
Today, we accomplish a large part of this important work during our summer youth program, Superkids Camp. Open and free to all rising Baltimore City Students in grades 1-5, SuperKids Camp provides 6 weeks of literacy and STEAM-focused enrichment to prevent the "summer slide" for students living in Baltimore’s most underserved communities.
We know that children who spend time outdoors in natural environments experience improved health and cognitive functions, strong motor coordination, reduced stress, and enhanced social skills.
We also know that the majority of city students living at low to moderate income levels are living in highly urbanized neighborhoods with limited access to natural spaces. Many of these same students will lose close to two months of grade-level equivalency in reading during the summer.
With these statistics in mind, we focus SuperKids Camp lesson plans on reading, environmental literacy, character development, and fostering an appreciation of the environment through hands-on learning. Students spend their summers learning with their peers, completing reading challenges, and taking virtual field trips. They are embracing nature and making new friends, while ensuring they will hit the ground running when they return to their classrooms in the fall.
Parks & People remains deeply committed to helping children in Baltimore City reach their full potential.
